Children
Class one provides a friendly and engaging environment for children beginning their school life at Howard Primary School. We have a mixed age class of Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children. This enables smooth transition from the Early Years Foundation Stage to the National Curriculum of Key Stage1.
Reception children are admitted to class 1 at the beginning of the Autumn term after their fourth birthday. In the summer term prior to this, new entrant children are visted in their pre-school setting by our class 1 teacher. They are also invited to numerous 'school experience' sessions. A parent/Guardian school dinner is also part of this experience. New children usually settle in quickly and are keen to attend full time.
We appreciate that parents and pupils may find the first few days at school a time of adjustment and we are very sensitive to this. We have a home text system in place to ease this process.
The setting for class 1 is spacious with a large wet area, activity tables, home and role-play corners, quiet reading and writing areas plus computer facilities (interactive whiteboard and laptops).
Double doors lead to the outdoor classroom which provides a covered activity area, playground and grassed area(including growing zones and pathways to a wooden play barn). This gives us a secure and exciting learning environment, with a conservation/woodland area beyond. There is plenty of room to investigate and explore.
We aim to provide a secure, positive and exciting learning environment for all our younger pupils.
